My worst fears about Fatima have been laid to rest. It is truly a beautiful setting. The old Basilica is fairly typical of late 19th century ornamental decoration. However it has some relatively modern style paintings and very modern glass in the clerestories. The Chapel of the Grotto is open at one end with glass walls and very modest in decor. But Ah! The new basilica is stunning! Clean simple lines, white with gold interior, and a semicircular seating ares which looks like it would hold about 3,000 people. There are several administration and residence buildings all surrounded with the most tranquil gardens. There was the most profound sense of peace and calm throughout the area. There were of course shops in town where you could buy tchachkas to your hearts content but not on the grounds of the sanctuaries. I am so happy to have had this experience of spiritual dignity in this beautiful place.
